Custom PVD Finish Artwork

Product Overview

Description:

This custom fiberglass art installation consists of multiple elongated fiberglass elements arranged to create a dynamic visual composition. The fiberglass components were supplied by the client, while Nemez Metal Works was responsible for developing and applying the custom PVD finish.

Achieving a uniform finish along the full length of the fiberglass rods required extensive testing and process development. After multiple trials and refinements, Nemez successfully achieved the desired coating effect while maintaining consistency across all elements.

The operation seems simple, but we conducted multiple experiments.

First experiment: The fiberglass strip couldn't be evenly colored. The reason for the failure was the long, thin fiberglass strip. Our initial PVD coating only clamped and secured the ends, neglecting the fact that the fiberglass is relatively soft and couldn't be secured in the middle, resulting in uneven coloring.

Second experiment: We made a metal frame that could secure both ends and the middle, but another problem arose: the metal support in the middle blocked the coating on that portion of the fiberglass—preventing coloring.

Third experiment: We made the metal frame in the middle higher. This time it was successful; the entire fiberglass strip was evenly colored (the coloring at the ends was negligible as the customer didn't consider it).
